Lindsay leads Bees past Rayz

Hidalgo, TX - Evan Lindsay made 34 saves on Sunday night and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees spread out the scoring as they beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-0 at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo. The loss for Corpus Christi was their first in three games and capped off a busy week of hockey. The Rayz played their fourth game in six nights in their fourth different city, finishing 2-2 in the stretch. The win for the Valley propelled them into fourth place and the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. They are now ten points ahead of Corpus Christi. The Rayz and Killer Bees will meet four more times this season.

In the first period, Rio Grande Valley came out of the gates and jumped all over Corpus Christi. The Bees mounted an early attack and outshot the Rayz 11-1 to open up the contest. The barrage of shots led to the only goal in the first period. Trevor Weisgerber slammed home a rebound past Scott Reid (54 shots, 49 saves) at 4:41 for his 17th goal of the season. After the Killer Bees took the lead 1-0, the Bees kept the pressure on. Reid was remarkable turning aside constant chances throughout the frame. His counterpart Evan Lindsay was terrific as well making all 17 saves the Rayz forced him to make. Rio Grande Valley outshot Corpus Christi 19-17.

The Killer Bees added to their lead in the second period on a power goal at 12:33. After Reid made three straight saves, defenseman Matt Medley rushed into the play, found the loose puck and shot it past Reid to give the Killer Bees a 2-0 lead. The Bees outshot the Rayz 16-12 in the second period.

In the third period, the Bees tacked on three goals for the 5-0 win. Bill Newson score unassisted on a breakaway at 10:39 to make the score 3-0. Matt Medley then tallied his second power play goal of the game at 13:34. Kurtis Dule scored on his own rebound on a power play at 16:04 to complete the scoring. The Killer Bees outshot the Rayz 19-5 in the third period and 54-34 overall.

The Rayz record dropped to 17-27-2 for 36 points. Rio Grande Valley improved their record to 21-19-4 for 46 points. Reid played well, keeping Corpus Christi in the game through the first two periods, however took the loss and his record fell to 11-14-1. Lindsay's shutout was his second of the season and improved his record 17-13-2. The loss snapped both Corpus Christi's two-game winning streak and the Killer Bees' eight-game winless stretch. The Rayz went scoreless on five power play attempts. Rio Grande Valley went 3-7 on the power play.

The Rayz continue their season long, four-game road trip on Tuesday night with a visit to the Laredo Entertainment Center to take on the Bucks. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Saturday, February 18th when they host the Austin Ice Bats on "Guaranteed Fight Night" with the Rayz.
