August 7, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, Texas: August 5, 2003 â The Corpus Christi Rayz are pleased to welcome several key additions to their organization, in an exciting day for Rayz hockey, General Manager/Vice President Pat Dunn announced today. The Rayz have reacquired one of their most popular players in franchise history, left wing, Brad Wingfield, and resigned last season's team MVP, goaltender, Brent Belecki. They have also announced the front office addition of Josh Bogorad as the team's new Director of Media Relations and Play-by-Play Broadcaster.
Wingfield, 28, returns to Corpus Christi after two years in both the American Hockey League and the United Hockey League. Wingfield, commonly known to the Rayz fans as Winger, makes his way back to Corpus Christi for the first time since 2001, when he played three consecutive years for the club. In his three seasons with the Rayz, Wingfield has 98 points and 729 penalty minutes.
Regarded as the most feared, physical player in Minor League Hockey, Wingfield, stands 6'2" and weighs 242 lbs. Originally, from Gibsons, British Columbia, Wingfield is coming off an outstanding season in the UHL where he tallied a career high in points (45) and set a UHL record with 576 penalty minutes.
Belecki, 25, was named the Rayz most valuable player last season, after posting stellar numbers in every goaltending category. In a season marred by injuries, Belecki appeared in 58 of the Rayz 64 games last year. He finished the season with a 2.77 GAA and a .920 save percentage.
At only 25 years of age, Belecki, a butterfly goaltender known for his quickness and agility, will be entering his ninth season of professional hockey. Belecki, who was born in Calgary, Alberta, is heralded throughout the league for his cat-like reflexes and quick lateral movement. His focus and desire to win give the Rayz a lot of strength and confidence in goal.
Bogorad, comes to Corpus Christi with many years of sports media experience. He has held positions in broadcasting and public relations at the professional and collegiate levels. A Los Angeles native, Bogorad worked as a sports correspondent and media liaison for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.
He was the broadcaster for the University of Arizona Icecats hockey team, and named to the announcing booth for the 2001 American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championship Tournament. He will broadcast the entire 64-game season on the Rayz Radio Network.
The Rayz drop the puck on the 2003-04 Central Hockey League season on October 16, when they host the New Mexico Scorpions. Season tickets and group packages are currently available. For more information, please contact the Rayz office at (361)814-7825.
