San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints announced today that last season's starting goaltender Scott Reid has been signed to return to the team for the 2003-04 season. The Saints now have a CHL-leading 15 players signed for the upcoming season.
Reid was one of the few bright spots for the Saints last season. He came to training camp on just a tryout contract and won the job as the back-up goalie over 4 other prospective netminders. It was not long, though, before Reid took over the starting job and posted 12 of the Saints' 20 wins last season. Despite his 12-22-4 record, Reid ranked 5th in the CHL in Saves and tied for 3rd in Shootout Wins (3). He also faced an average of more shots per game (40) than any other goalie in the league and still posted a respectable 3.96 goals-against-average and .904 save percentage. Reid also posted the 1st shut-out in Saints history on Dec. 14 against Corpus Christi. For his efforts he was named the Saints' Rookie of the Year and one of the Unsung Heroes of the CHL by the In The Crease web-site and Just Hockey Magazine.
"Scott is another talented young player and we worked hard this off-season to sign him, but we aren't going to just hand him the starting job," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "We will bring in another quality goaltender to push Scott and make him even better. Our plan is to have great goaltending no matter who gets the start for any given game."
"I'm excited to be coming back to San Angelo," said Reid. "The fans are great and I can't say enough good things about Ray and the Saints organization. It's nice to be coming back to a place I'm so comfortable."
Reid is entering his 2nd full professional season. He played 4 seasons of Jr. hockey in the WHL and BCJHL, and 10 pro games in the WCHL before attending college at Grant MacEwan College and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Despite deceptively bad numbers on a bad team at Grant MacEwan, Reid had a very successful college career. He was named to the ACAC All-Star Team all 4 years of college and was his team's MVP all 4 years as well. His 3rd year at Grant MacEwan he was presented a scholarship from the NHL's Edmonton Oilers. His one season at NAIT, he posted the top GAA and Save% in the ACAC and was nominated for Male Athlete of the Year.
Reid is also looking forward to being reunited with his friend and teammate, Saints defenseman Konrad Brand, who he has played with in college and the pros.
"Konrad and I enjoy playing together," said Reid. "I'm sure he's thinking up some new practical jokes to play on me and I'll be doing the same. It should be a fun and more successful year."
"I've heard nothing but good things about Scott and we're happy to have him back," added Edwards. "I've watched enough video of him to know what to expect. If he continues his development he should have a very successful season."
The Saints now have 8 forwards, 6 defensemen and a goaltender signed for the upcoming season. There are exhibition games set for Oct 10th (home) and 11th (away) against Odessa with the regular season home opener set for Oct 18th at the San Angelo Coliseum. Season tickets and multi-game ticket packs remain on sale at the Saints office and the San Angelo Convention Center. And, don't forget the Saints' 1st Annual Town Hall Meeting set for August 19th at 7 p.m. at the convention center.
