Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
PRINCETON, WV- The Princeton Rays (10-8) completed a sweep-the team's first of the season-of the Bristol Pirates (8-10) with a 5-1 victory at H.P. Hunnicutt Field on Monday.
The Rays jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Rays left fielder Trek Stemp singled to lead off the inning for Princeton, then advanced to third on a single by center fielder Oscar Rojas. Both Rojas and right fielder Eleardo Cabrera, who was hit by a pitch, later scored on a single by designated hitter Emilio Gustave.
Bristol notched its only run of the game in the second inning on a wild pitch, but the Rays bounced back to score two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 4-1. The insurance runs came on a 2-RBI single by Stemp, a 2016 Rays draft pick out of Washington State.
Princeton added another run in the eighth on a single by Gustave to seal the 5-1 victory.
Gustave finished with a team-high three RBI on three hits in the game while Stemp drove in the other two Rays runs with two hits of his own.
Rays starter, Dominican left-hander Resly Linares, pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out four. Linares earned his first win of the season for his efforts.
The Princeton bullpen held the Pirates scoreless for the rest of the game, as relievers Sandy Brito, Alex Estrella, and Reimin Ramos pitched a combined four shutout innings. Ramos earned the save, his second of the season, while Brito and Estrella were both credited with a hold.
After the first off day of the season on Tuesday, the Rays will head to Bluefield for a three-game series against the Blue Jays beginning on Wed., July 13 at 7:05 p.m. at Bowen Field.
