Rays Pitchers Keep Orlando Rolling

ORLANDO -Orlando starting pitcher Doug Waechter tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Rays to a 2-1 win over the visiting Birmingham Barons in front of 5,291 fans at Cracker Jack Stadium Saturday.

Waechter (2-2), a native of St. Petersburg, held the Barons scoreless through six, allowing just three hits. Matt Diaz went 1-3 with an RBI in the 1st inning and Jonny Gomes added his 6th home run in the 4th inning to give Orlando all the runs it would need, propelling the Rays to their third straight win. Birmingham managed to push one run across in the 9th, but Mark Malaska entered with a pair of Barons on base and two outs, but got pinch-hitter Carlos Maldonado to fly out to center, earning Malaska his first save of the season.

RP John Rocker pitched another scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit while striking out one. The 28-year-old lefty tossed eight strikes on 14 pitches in the 7th inning.

The Rays and Barons square off again tomorrow at 1:35 as the Rays send RHP Jim Magrane (2-1, 4.43) to the mound to face RHP Enemencio Pacheco (2-0, 0.36).

O-Rays Notes:

· Sunday is Beanie Baby giveaway day at Cracker Jack Stadium, with turnstile attendants set to distribute 1,000 Beanie Babies to O-Rays guests

· The O-Rays play Birmingham in the final game of the series tomorrow, then have an off day Monday, followed by a 4-game set with the East Division-leading Carolina Mudcats starting Tuesday.
