Stars Win, Lead West by Three Games
May 3, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
Huntsville, AL â Behind solid pitching from right-hander Pedro Liriano, Huntsville knocked off Chattanooga, 4-2, on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (17-11) moved six games over .500 for the first time this year and pushed their lead in the Southern League West Division to three games, their largest of the season.
Liriano (2-3) deserved a win in his last start, but the Stars let a lead slip away in the ninth. Saturday, Liriano exited leading 4-1, and the bullpen secured his second victory. Liriano threw six solid frames â his fourth straight quality start â allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while fanning four. After surrendering a run in the first, Liriano shut out Chattanooga over his final five frames, permitting only two runners to advance past first.
Huntsville's offense was opportunistic, scoring one run in four different innings. Down 1-0 in the second, Brandon Gemoll led off with a single and was forced out at second on Cristian Guerrero's ground ball. Guerrero stole second, took third on Richard Paz's groundout and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs in the third, Ryan Knox blooped a double into right, stole third and scored on Dave Krynzel's base hit for a 2-1 Stars lead. Gemoll launched a solo homer to right in the fourth, his first of the season, and Joel Alvarado made it 4-1 with a bases-loaded walk â one of his four walks in the game â that plated Krynzel in the sixth.
Stars reliever Derek Lee pitched the eighth, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout, and Matt Parker notched his second save with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three. Dustin Moseley (2-1) absorbed the loss for the Lookouts, surrendering four runs on seven hits and five walks over 5 2/3 innings.
Huntsville matches righty Ben Diggins (2-1, 2.02) against Lookouts right-hander Bobby Basham (0-3, 2.74) in the series finale Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 2:05 p.m. on WZYP day.
