Rays hit speedbump, fall to Bats 4-1

Miguel Beaudry stopped 27 of 28 shots to lead the Austin Ice Bats past the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-1 Wednesday Night at the American Bank Center. The loss dropped the Rayz five points behind Austin and four points behind the Amarillo Gorillas for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference with only six games remaining. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center for their final home game of the season on Saturday, March 15th at 7:05 versus the Texas Brahmas for Ice Rayz Appreciation Night. The first 1,000 fans will receive free youth jerseys courtesy of Toyota Tundra, Advantage Protection, and Navy/Army Credit Union. Tickets are on sale now. In the first period, the Rayz and the Ice Bats each had a powerplay opportunity, but neither was able to capitalize. The scored stayed 0-0 going into the first intermission.

In the second period, Austin was the first team to score in the game. At 2:57, Kurtis Kisio scored after stealing a Corpus Christi pass in the Rayz zone. The goal put the Ice Bats up 1-0. The Ice Bats scored again at 13:39 when Ted Vandemeer found Brendan Cook wide-open in front of the Rayz net. Mike Bartlett was credited with the other assist as Austin took their 2-0 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period the Ice Bats increased their lead to 3-0 at 2:30 when Zech Klann scored a rebound goal after a shot by Daniel Veenema. The Rayz got on the board at 16:51 with a powerplay goal and an extra-attacker. Brent Howarth scored his 20th goal of the year with helpers from Kevin Watters and Justin Quenneville. The goal cut Austin's lead to 3-1. The Rayz thought they had pulled within one at 17:34 when Watters beat Beaudry with a rebound shot, but referee Steve Cruickshank had lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead just before the puck crossed the line. Following the disallowed goal, the Ice Bats capped the scoring with a shorthanded, empty net by R.G. Flath at 18:30.

Jason Tapp made 35 saves on 38 shots and took the loss, dropping to 20-26-6. Austin goaltender Miguel Beaudry got the win with 27 saves on 28 shots. His record improved to 18-18-1. Corpus Christi went 1-6 on the power play and Austin was 0-5 with the extra man. The Rayz were out shot 39-28.
