Rays Dominate in Home Opener
June 26, 2016 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
The Princeton Rays (3-1) won their first home game of the season 11-4 over the Danville Braves (2-2) behind a dominant pitching performance from right-handed starter Edrick Agosto.
Agosto pitched five no-hit innings while striking out three Braves batters at H.P. Hunnicutt Field. The 2015 draft pick out of Puerto Rico was credited with the win for his efforts in his first start of the 2016 season.
The Braves notched three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the potential comeback fell short as Rays relievers Mikey York, Orlando Romero, and Reign Letkeman closed out the game on the mound.
The dominant pitching was echoed with an offensive barrage by the Rays lineup.
Rays returner and third baseman Blake Butera led Princeton with three singles to bring his batting average up to a team-high .375 amongst Rays batters with at least ten at-bats this season.
Designated hitter Devin Davis drove in a team-high three RBI in the contest, all of which came on a triple in the fifth inning. Princeton notched six runs total in the fifth to break the game open and take a 10-0 lead.
The fifth inning opened with back-to-back singles by Rays catcher Rafelin Lorenzo and center fielder Emilio Gustave, who both advanced a base when first baseman Bobby Melley was hit by a pitch. Both Lorenzo and Gustave later scored on a Braves error, pushing the Rays lead to 6-0.
The fifth inning continued as left fielder Isaac Benard walked, then scored on Davis' 3-RBI triple. The final run of the breakthrough inning came on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz, a 2016 Rays draft pick out of the University of California-Berkeley.
The Rays lineup went on to notch one more run in the sixth to clinch their third win of the season.
The Rays will face the Braves again at home for the second game of the series on Mon., June 27 starting at 7 p.m. at H.P. Hunnicutt Field.
The Princeton Rays have been the proud Appalachian League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays since 1997. All questions may be forwarded to the Rays' front office at 304-487-2000 or princetonrays@frontier.com.
