Albany River Rats News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA-River Rats Assistant Captain Mike Angelidis broke a scoreless tie early in the third period and Jerome Samson scored the eventual game-winner minutes later to lift the Albany River Rats to a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Albany, which claimed a 3-0 lead in its best-of-seven, East Division semi-final series, will look to sweep the first round match-up on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The River Rats out-shot the Penguins 20-17 through two closely contested, scoreless periods, before Albany's forward line of Mike Angelidis, Jerome Samson and Zach Boychuk broke through for the game's first two goals early in the third.

Angelidis struck first at 2:16 on a gritty rebound tally, stemming from a strong drive to the net and shot from Boychuk. The line then doubled Albany's lead at 5:45, when a sharp angle shot from Jerome Samson hit Wyatt Smith's skate blade and popped over Penguins goalie John Curry for the deciding marker.

Chris Conner gave the Penguins late life with a back-door put-away from Brian Strait at 14:27, but River Rats goalie Justin Peters stopped everything else that came his way to deny Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's late comeback bid.

Peters stopped 31-of-32 shots faced in the contest to earn his third straight victory, while Curry allowed two goals on 28 shots and took the loss. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton out-shot Albany 32-28 in the contest and went 0-for-5 on the power play; Albany went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage.
