Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield Cardinals' outfielder Colby Rasmus has been named the Topps Texas League Player of the Month for the month of May as well as Texas League Player of the Week.

The 20-year old out of Phenix City, Alabama, had an outstanding month of May, hitting .340 with a league-high eight home runs and 24 RBIs in 29 games. Rasmus also set a 2007 team-high with a 12-game hitting streak, hitting safely in 16 of his first 17 May games. He's the first Springfield Cardinals' player to be named Topps Texas League Player of the Month in franchise history.

The huge month for Rasmus keeps him at the top or near the top of the leaderboard in a number of different categories. He leads the circuit in RBIs (36), doubles (22) and extra-base hits (33). He's also seventh in hitting (.300), third in home runs (10) and second in slugging percentage (.584).

The former 2005 first round draft pick also put up some amazing numbers this past week, and in doing so, became the third Springfield player this year to win Texas League Player of the Week honors. Rasmus had a two-homer game on Monday night and a franchise record-tying seven-RBI game on Tuesday, leading Springfield to back-to-back wins over San Antonio at Hammons Field. Rasmus finished the week by hitting .450 (9-20), with three home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored in just six games, leading the Cards to a 4-2 record.

Rasmus and the Springfield Cardinals are just 2 ½ games back of division-leading Tulsa, with the Drillers coming to Hammons Field on Tuesday for a four-game series. The opening game will feature Springfield right-hander Mitchell Boggs (4-3) taking on Tulsa's Franklin Morales (0-2). Tuesday will be a huge promotional day, as the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest will come to Hammons Field. Fans that have a ticket to Tuesday's game can enjoy more than 20 inflatable attractions, an X-Box 360 Video Game Trailer, a Minor League Baseball Museum and much more in front of the main gates at Hammons Field. The fun kicks off at 4:10pm, three full hours before game time. Tuesday night is also our third of four World Series Replica Ring Giveaways, as 1,250 fans will receive a World Series Replica Ring. Gates open at 6:10 and game time is 7:10pm. Be sure and get here early if you'd like to receive a World Series Replica Ring, as they're sure to go quickly.
