Rascals Record 15 Hits But Drop Second Straight
June 11, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
The Rascals put up 15 hits including a home run that tied the game up in the sixth, but eight runs from the Southern Illinois Miners in the final three innings gave them an 11-3 victory Saturday night at CarShield Field.
Coming into tonight's contest, the Rascals gave up runs in the first inning the previous three games but starter Joe Scanio changed that and got the 2016 record crowd of 3,033 into the game early retiring the side in order.
The Rascals offense got going in the second and they put together consecutive singles, including a hit from Mike Jurgella that got Jason Merjano to third. One batter later, Griff Gordon delivered a sacrifice fly and the Rascals led for the first time in the series. Kyle Gaedele followed that up with his second home run in as many days and continues his offensive outburst during this seven game home stand. After tonight's game, Gaedele is 10-20 with four extra-base hits and nine RBI.
Scanio kept the game at 2-0 after a scoreless third and his offense almost gave him another run in the bottom half with two hits however a close play at the second base bag ended the threat.
In the fourth, the Miners cut the lead in half with a RBI single from Steve Marino and then took the lead in the fifth with a two run home run off Scanio. The go-ahead hit was from Aaron Gates and it marked his team leading fifth home run of the year.
Scanio would get out of the inning with a ground out and a fly out, which ended up being a double play due to the runner leaving early from second base.
Despite having two on with one out, the Rascals were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth but would tie the game up in their next opportunity.
With two outs in the sixth, Willi Martin launched a home run to center and tied the game up at three.
"It felt good because we were all competing and I just got a good pitch to hit, put a good swing on it and it gave our team a chance to come back and win the game," Martin said.
That would be the closest the Rascals came to retaking the lead as the Miners biggest inning of the series took place in the top of the seventh. With one out, Aaron Gates reached on an error and then a double and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Alex De Leon singled into left field to give the Miners a 5-3 lead and then Nolan Early put them up five runs with a three run home run. That would chase Scanio out of the game and he finished giving up eight runs, six earned on 12 hits. The second year Rascal also struck out two and took the loss in 6 1/3 innings
Manager Steve Brook went to Will Schierholz next and a solo home run from Shane Kennedy put the opponent up six. Michael Gunn finished out the game for the pitching staff and gave up two runs on the Miners fourth home run of the night.
Offensively after the sixth inning for the Rascals, they would get three hits and the Miners finished up using five pitchers. The starter Rick Teasley got the win giving up the three runs in six innings and then Nick Palacios, Carson Goldsmith, Chris DeBoo and Kyle Tinius held the Rascals scoreless in the final three.
The Rascals had 15 hits in total and everybody in the lineup recorded at least one hit. Robby Enslen led the way with three and four Rascals each had two: Morales, Gordon, Gaedele and Martin.
The only four game series of the year continues Sunday afternoon with a double header. It will begin at 1:00 with Zeb Sneed on the mound and Joe Pavlovich is slated to go game two.
