River City Rascals News Release
Tim Koons took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning but was outdueled by Wild Things right-hander Trevor Foss as he threw his third complete-game shutout of the year to lead the Wild Things to a 3-0 win over River City (26-29) Thursday night at Consol Energy Park. In his eighth win of the year, Foss allowed just three hits and allowed only two runners in scoring position including one in the ninth inning that brought the tying run to the plate.
With two outs, Foss hit Josh Silver and then got to third after Kyle Gaedele's second hit of the night to bring up Willi Martin.
Silver was the lone Rascal to reach third base in the game however was left stranded when a Willi Martin ground out ended the game and gave the Wild Things their first series win of the second half.
The other Rascal hit came from Josh Ludy with a single to break up Foss's no-hitter in the fourth inning and it was the second time in the past three games that River City was held to just three hits.
Rascal's starter Tim Koons was stellar as well and just one baserunner reached in the first five innings, a walk to the leadoff hitter Jamodrick McGruder.
The third year starter faced the minimum until there was one out in the sixth inning and the turning point in the game came with a ground-rule double from Austin Wobrock. McGruder followed that up with a RBI single and then the Wild Things got their third hit of the inning with a two out RBI single to score McGruder and take a 2-0 lead.
Koons rebounded with a strong start to the seventh inning including getting his sixth strikeout of the night but then Washington tagged him for three consecutive hits, including a RBI single from Wobrock, his second of the series.
Jason Zgardowski took over for Koons in the eighth and in his Rascals debut he struck out one and allowed no runs on one hit and a walk.
The shutout was the fifth time the Rascals were shutout on the year and it marked the shortest game of the year at 2 hours and five minutes.
With the loss, the Rascals remain fourth in the Western Division but are only three games back from the final wild card spot with 41 games to go.
The season continues Friday night as the Rascals play host to the Traverse City Beach Bums at CarShield Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 and Josh Wright has been named the starter for game one of the three game set.
