Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, ILL. - The Southern Illinois Miners and Joliet Slammers played to a 7-7 tie score through the top of the seventh inning at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night before heavy rains forced the game to be suspended. The game will be finished on Friday, August 5th, at Rent One Park, the next time the Miners and Slammers meet in the course of the regular season, with Joliet coming to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Miners took an immediate lead in the top of the first inning when back-to-back doubles by KURT WERTZ, JR. and CRAIG MASSEY gave them a 1-0 lead. ALEX DE LEON then followed with a two-run homer to left-center for a 3-0 advantage. Joliet came all the way back in the bottom half of the inning, getting five straight hits with two outs to score four runs and take the lead, 4-3, on Joe Staley's RBI single.
Both DAN LUDWIG and Joliet's Liam O'Sullivan settled down after the first, with both starters holding the other team scoreless until the fifth, when the Miners scoring four runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead. Wertz, Jr. doubled home the tying run in the frame, and two batters later, De Leon crushed a three-run blast to straight-away center field to complete the Miners' scoring in the inning.
But again, Joliet came back, this time with three runs on three hits to tie the score at 7-7. It remained tied until the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended. Southern Illinois will come home to begin a six-game homestand on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Washington Wild Things, with JARETT MILLER pitching for the Miners against the Wild Things' Sam Agnew-Wieland
