River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, MO - Phil Laurent announced he is coming back to the site which made him a Frontier League All-Star during the 2007 season.
Laurent signed a contract to the River City Rascals for their 10th Anniversary season. Laurent's .341 average, 12 home runs, and 46 RBI through 57 games, put him in an elite company. Through 57 games, he was the only Frontier League player to be in the top ten in batting average, top five in home runs and top five in runs batted in.
Laurent was then signed by the San Diego Padres where he transferred to their rookie league affiliate in Arizona.
"Playing for the Padres was a great experience," Laurent said. "I wish that I have had more of an opportunity to show the value that I could bring to their organization. I am now more motivated than ever for next season."
After one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in Rascals history, Laurent hopes to lead the Rascals into the post season for the second time in the franchise's 10 year history.
"Coming back to River City was an easy decision," Laurent continued. "They are a top class organization from top to bottom, and I really enjoyed the time with the fans and the booster club last season. I'm excited to be back and to help the Rascals win a Frontier League championship."
Adding the left-handed hitting sensation to the 2008 roster proves to be an easy decision for team Manager Toby Rumfield as well. "It's great to have Phil back. Not only are we getting back a top notch player with Phil, we're getting a top notch person. He shows up to play everyday and is a class act. We're thrilled to have him back."
Laurent's feelings toward Rumfield are mutual adding, "Toby Rumfield is another big reason for my return this season. I have a great deal of respect for him and his family. I'm very excited to be able to play for him again this season."
Laurent joins Andrew Sweet as players who saw actions with Rascals in 2007 before ending the season elsewhere. In addition to Laurent and Sweet, the Rascals have added RHP Jason Baca, RHP Josh Regits and LHP Brian Logan to the mix via trade.
