Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Friday, April 27, 2012) - The Colorado Rapids announced on Friday that the club has re-signed midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, a member of Rapids' 2010 MLS Cup-winning team and United States National Team player, to a multi-year contract.
"Jeff has been an incredibly important part of this team since he joined us before the 2010 season," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "We needed his strong play and leadership to win the MLS Cup, and the United States National Team has also seen his value. We're thrilled that he'll continue in our midfield for years to come."
"I'm extremely happy to stay here and be a part of this club for many years in the future," said Larentowicz. "I think that [as] you get comfortable with the league, you understand what it takes, you understand what your teammates are expecting of you, and you step up and fill that [leadership] role."
Larentowicz, 28, has played 70 regular season games (starting 69) for the Rapids since joining the team in 2010, and played in every game during the 2010 and 2011 regular seasons and playoffs. He set a career-high in scoring with a team-leading seven goals in 2011, and was an MLS All-Star in 2010. Before joining the Rapids, Larentowicz played five seasons with the New England Revolution, playing 101 games (93 starts), scoring nine goals and adding nine assists as the team made three MLS Cup appearances.
With the United States National Team, Larentowicz has made four appearances, including a pair of 1-0 wins this January over Venezuela and Panama. He made his debut in a 1-1 tie against Chile on January 22, 2011 and also played in a 1-0 loss at Belgium on September 6, 2011. A 2005 graduate of Brown University, Larentowicz was a four-time All-Ivy player in helping the Bears to two Ivy League titles, and was a two-time second team All-American.
The Rapids square off on Saturday against Chivas USA at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, with a special Heineken Lads Night Out deal on sale, which gives fans 2 tickets, 2 beers (or other drinks), 2 hot dogs and 2 scarves for just $44.
