Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, January 14, 2014) - The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club has re-signed veteran midfielder Brian Mullan to a new contract, and the Aurora native and five-time MLS Cup champion will return to the team in 2014. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Brian is exactly the type of player that you want on your team, since he gives everything he has on the field and is a great professional off of it," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "As a true great in MLS and one of the very best players that Colorado has ever produced, we're proud to have him on the Rapids, and excited that he'll be returning for this season."
"I'm excited to be coming back to the Rapids this season, and for the opportunity to continue playing in my hometown," said Mullan. "I'm eager for the chance to contribute to a team that keeps moving in the right direction and has a lot of potential to achieve great things."
Mullan, 35, came to the Rapids at the trade deadline in 2010, helping Colorado to the team's first-ever MLS Cup just two months later. In four seasons with Colorado, the midfielder has played 73 games (64 starts), scoring three goals and adding 12 assists. He has reached the MLS Cup Playoffs in 12 of his 13 MLS seasons, and is tied for the league record in MLS Cup wins, capturing the title with the LA Galaxy (2002), San Jose Earthquakes (2003), Houston Dynamo (2006, 2007) and Rapids (2010). He has played a total of 323 regular season games (291 starts), 10th all-time in MLS among non-goalkeepers, scoring 29 goals and adding 58 assists.
A native of Aurora, Colo., Mullan attended Regis Jesuit High School, where he was the 1996-97 Colorado Player of the Year, and led the school to state titles in his junior and senior years. He then starred at Creighton University, where he was a forward from 1997-2000, eventually being named to the school's Hall of Fame in 2008. In addition to his success on the soccer field, Mullan was a standout youth hockey player, playing for Team Colorado and the Select 15 and Select 17 USA Hockey Teams before committing to soccer full time.
Colorado holds the 11th overall selection in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, to take place this Thursday, January 16 in Philadelphia, and the Rapids will open preseason in late January. The Rapids season starts on March 15 at New York Red Bulls, with the Home Opener at Dick's Sporting Goods Park against the Portland Timbers on March 22.
