Colorado Rapids News Release
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Colorado Rapids were on the wrong side of a 4-1 decision against the Kansas City Wizards but remain in playoff position going into the final six games of the season.
The Rapids gave up the first goal of the game in the first minute. Scott Sealy put in a wide open rebound off of a Joe Cannon save of an Alex Zotinca shot.
In the second minute Jovan Kirovski had the Rapids first shot, a volley that Bo Oshoniyi parried away.
Sealy nearly put the home side up by two in the seventh minute but Colorado defender Pablo Mastroeni put enough pressure on him to force his shot high and wide.
Kyle Beckerman added to his career offensive year in the 11th minute with his sixth goal of the season. After a long build up, Jacob Peterson controlled a ball in the penalty area and dropped it to Beckerman who hit a ball with the outside of his right foot from 20 yards out that beat Oshoniyi to the goalkeeper's left.
Dave van den Bergh broke through the Colorado defense in the 14th minute but a hustling Mastroeni deflected his shot out of bounds.
Cannon made another save in the 28th minute when he redirected a van den Bergh shot over his goal.
The Rapids had the first scoring chance of the second half in the 49th minute when a Clint Mathis corner kick found Kirovski in the penalty area. The former US international's header was saved and bounced to Nicolas Hernandez who couldn't get it past Oshoniyi and a defender at the far post.
Another rebound goal put the Wizards up 2-1 in the 53rd minute. Cannon made a diving save on a Jack Jewsbury shot but the rebound fell to van den Bergh who made no mistake as he finished the play.
Clint Mathis had a ball in the back of the net within a minute. However, the goal was called back as the assistant referee claimed the ball had gone out of bounds before Colin Clark had crossed the ball.
Davy Arnaud scored to make it 3-1 when he put in a Jose Burciaga Jr. corner kick with his left foot in the 56th minute.
The same two Wizards combined for a goal in the 77th minute with Burciaga feeding Arnaud again for the games final goal.
Colorado will next host the Chicago Fire in a midweek match at 7:30 MT on Wednesday, September 13 at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
