Colorado Rapids News Release
DENVER - The lone goal by striker Nicolas Hernandez was enough for the Colorado Rapids to defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 tonight for the third time this season.
The Rapids had the first scoring opportunity in the sixth minute when striker Thiago Martins made a run into the box. The Brazilian cut the ball back to a waiting Jovan Kirovski, but the Los Angeles defense slid in front of the forward and put the ball out of bounds, clearing the danger.
In the first ten minutes of the first half the Rapids had some other scoring chances as well. Daniel Wasson had a header saved by Kevin Hartman and Martins had a shot go just inches wide.
Joe Cannon made his first save of the game in the 36th minute. The hero of the 2006 Sierra Mist All-Star Game tipped an acute-angled shot over the crossbar.
The Rapids took the lead in the 41st minute as Nicolas Hernandez struck for his team-high sixth goal. Martins hustled to earn a turnover deep in the Galaxy end to spring the Rapids attack. He then found Kyle Beckerman making a run down the left side and played him behind the defense. Beckerman put a low ball across the face of goal that a streaking Hernandez powered into the back of the net.
Cannon preserved his fourth shutout of the season in the 90th minute with a fantastic diving save on a close shot by Landon Donovan.
The Rapids will next travel to the nation's capital to take on D.C. United on Saturday, August 19 at 2:00 p.m. (MT) LIVE on Espn2.
