Kitchener Rangers News Release
Kitchener Rangers graduateÃÂ Liam MaaskantÃÂ of the Acadia Axemen has been named the 2019-20 recipient of the AUS' Godfrey Award, or the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Maaskant is also the AUS nominee for the prestigious Dr. Randy Gregg Award.
The Godfrey Award is presented annually to the player who best represents "the spirit of intercollegiate hockey by his leadership both on and off the ice and by his conduct throughout the season."
The defender played 28 games with the Axemen this season, scoring 15 points (4-11-15) and serving as team captain for two years. His four-year OHL career included stints with the Erie Otters, Barrie Colts and Kitchener Rangers, where he amassed 31 points (10-21-31) over 192 games.
Maaskant, a native of Clinton, Ont. also volunteers his time both with the university and local communities. He is co-president of the Acadia Players' Association and is involved with the S.M.I.L.E. program (Sensory Motor Instructional Learning Experience) as a leader and program buddy. He's also heavily involved in a number of fundraising and minor hockey events, such as Acadia's Hearts on Ice that helps raise funds for the Valley Cardiac Rehab Society and Hannah Miller Memorial Tournament.
Maaskant becomes the third Axemen skater to receive the honour and the first since Kelowna Rockets graduate Kristopher Westblom won the award following the 2010-2011 season.
He has the chance to become the first ever Acadia player to win the national Dr. Randy Gregg Award.
