St. Louis Steamers News Release

ST. LOUIS - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced on Monday afternoon that the St. Louis Steamers defender Randy Soderman has been awarded with the MISL Defensive Player of the Week. This is following the Steamers 8-4 win over the Chicago Storm on Dec. 29th at Savvis Center.

Soderman, 31, stayed as hot as the team when he scored in his fourth consecutive game in the Steamers' sixth consecutive win. The goal came off of a rebound of a missed shootout attempt by midfielder Mariano Bollella in the second quarter. Bollella's attempt was deflected wide by Chicago goalkeeper Danny Waltman. The deflection went off of the boards directly to Soderman who blasted in the rebound from the left wing. Randy also recorded a block to help keep the Storm from mounting a comeback.

Soderman's five goals lead all St. Louis defenders, and the seven blocks rank second to D.J. Newsom's 11. The 31-year-old defender is a vital part of a defense that has also been anchored by starting goalkeeper Brett Phillips, and defenders Newsom, Mali Walton, Genoni Martinez, and Mike Kirchhoff, among others, and ranks second to the Milwaukee Wave (8-0) in fewest goals yielded per game (4.6).

Soderman's goal gave the Steamers a 4-3 lead, a lead they would never give up on the night. The Steamers eventually won the game 8-4. They play next on Saturday, January 7th at 6:05 pm against the Philadelphia KiXX in Philadelphia. The next home game is on January 24th at 7:35 at Savvis Center against the Baltimore Blast.
