
Rams win again in doubleheader

WATERTOWN- Watertown (9-10) scored two of their three runs in the first inning to defeat visiting Newark (8-12) by a score of 3-1 in the second game of the doubleheader. Bryce Greager's (Chandler-Gilbert) 2-RBI double in the first wound up being the game winning RBIs. Kevin Klaess (Cypress) picked up the win (2-1) for the Rams while Drew Hasler (Valparaiso) took the loss (1-2) for the Pilots. With the win, Watertown now has sole possession of first place in the PGCBL West Division.
Watertown jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Rams also scored two runs in the first inning of game one. Joe Moroney (Kansas) led off the inning with a single and ensued to steal second base. Fellow Jayhawk Justin Protacio then bunted for a base hit with two strikes. Bryce Greager drove both runners home with a double into the right-center field gap.
Watertown scored a lone run in the third to conclude their scoring on the night. JJ Wagner (Pacific) drilled a 2-out double down the third base line. Austin Lueck (South Florida) then drove home Wagner with a single. Newark got one back in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1. Taylor Hinshaw (Georgia College) led off the inning with a double. Steve Laurino (Marist) then singled to left field. Hinshaw scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Klaess.
Watertown starter Kevin Klaess hurled five innings allowing one run to pick up the win. Logan Grant (Creighton) pitched two scoreless innings to record his first save of the season. Newark starter Ryan Hasler tossed a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits.
Joe Moroney finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run for Watertown. Brad Rush (St. John Fisher) also went 1-for-2 for the Rams.
Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch for Newark. David Vandercook (Columbia) also went 1-for-2 with a walk for the Pilots. Steve Laurino also contributed a 1-for-2 night.
Watertown will travel to Elmira tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Pioneers. The first game is set to begin at 5:05. Newark travels to Glens Falls to play the Golden Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
