
Newark wins 3-2 victory over Watertown

WATERTOWN- Samm Wiggins (Houston Baptist) hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give Newark (18-24) a 3-2 victory over host Watertown (25-18). Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher) picked up the win for Newark. Logan Grant (Creighton) took the loss for the Rams.
Newark jumped on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) led off the inning with a single and ensued to steal second base. Edwards advanced to third on a groundout and came across to score on a wild pitch by Rams starter Anthony Magovney (Buffalo). Watertown answered with a run of their own in the home half of the inning. Joe Moroney (Kansas) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a fielding error by Pilot left fielder Josh Ludwig (Rochester). Moroney came across the score on a Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) fielder's choice.
The game remained tied at one until the fifth when Bobby Indeglia (Holy Cross) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Joe Moroney sacrificed Indeglia to third with Dominic Lopez stepping up to the plate. Lopez delivered with his second RBI of the night, scoring Indeglia on a sacrifice fly. Watertown led 2-1 until the top of the eighth inning when Newark took the lead for good. Logan Grant relieved Ryan Smith (St. John Fisher) and retired the first two batters he faced. Max Rosing (Cortland) delivered with a two-out single to right field to put a runner on for Samm Wiggins. Wiggins followed with his third home run of the season to left field.
Watertown starter Anthony Magovney hurled six innings allowing one earned run in the no decision. Magovney struck out four while giving up five hits. Cody Culp (Bellevue) and Ryan Smith both tossed scoreless innings in relief for coach Paul Alteri. Newark starter Andrew Sanders (Ithaca) tossed seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) in his no decision. Donald Frew (Young Harris) secured the Pilot win with his ninth save of the season.
Joe Moroney finished 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to pace the Rams. Tyler Decker (JCC) also delivered a perfect night at the dish, going 2-for-2.
Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) and Steve Laurino (Marist) both delivered two hits for coach Mike Armstrong. Max Rosing contributed a 1-for-3 night for the Pilots.
A correction from last night: the last time a Watertown franchise made the postseason was in 2008, not 2007. I apologize for the confusion.
Watertown travels to Utica tomorrow night to face the Brewers with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Newark will play host to the Elmira Pioneers with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 PM.
