Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League announced today the signing of two of last season's team captains and free agent linemen, Corey Mayfield and Joe Wylie. Both players were signed to two-year deals.

Mayfield (6-3, 325, Oklahoma) returns for his fifth season with the Rampage after leading all GR linemen in tackles (13.5), sacks (3), and tackles for loss (5.5) last season. For his efforts, the former Sooner was named the team's Lineman of the Year for the second time in his career (also named in 1999). In his four-year stint with the Rampage, Mayfield has amassed 53.5 tackles, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown and 14 sacks, which places him atop the team's all-time list in that category. The 1999 AFL All-Rookie Team member was drafted in the 10th round (269th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1992 NFL Draft. After stints with the 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield's last stop in the NFL was with the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars, appearing in 16 games in 1995.

Wylie (6-3, 325, Stephen F. Austin) also returns for his fifth season with the Rampage. Last year, Wylie appeared in 13 games, recording 4.5 tackles and one pass breakup. Known as one of the best blocking centers in the league, Wylie was named a team captain last season and was awarded the Rampage Coaches' Award in 2001, an award that honors a player for his performance both on and off the field. Following a standout collegiate career, the former Lumberjack was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round (248th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. Wylie participated in the Raiders' training camp that season, and the Tennessee Titans' training camp the following season.

"Corey and Joey have been two of our anchors on this team for four seasons each," said Michael Trigg, Rampage head coach and director of football operations. "Having two captains back is very important as we try to maintain the nucleus that we won a championship with in 2001. Both are integral in protecting (Clint) Dolezel and allowing us to get the ball downfield. Mayfield is arguably one of the best nose guards in the league and Wylie is arguably one of the best centers in the AFL. Both gentleman solidify our line corps in a very tough Central Division."

After opening the 2003 season with back-to-back road contests, the Rampage kick off their home schedule with a 3 p.m. NBC affair against the New York Dragons on Sunday, Feb. 16. Full season and mini-plan ticket packages are currently available by calling the Rampage office at 1-888-595-4878.
