Rampage drop home opener in OT

ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, November 28, 2008 ... Making its Home Opener debut on "Black Friday" at the MetroCentre, the Rockford Rampage dropped its FIRST NISL (National Indoor Soccer League) game in a heartbreaking sudden death overtime 12-10 to Monterrey (Mexico) La RaZa.

La RaZa lit up the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal by #23 Byron Alvarez with 10:52 left on the clock in the first quarter. The Rampage answered back quickly scoring with 9:28 left in the period. The unassisted goal by Rockford's # 8, Bato Radoncic, tied it up going into the second period of regulation play.

Monterrey went ahead at 12:40 on a goal by La RaZa's #10, Ivan Medina and assisted by Byron Alvarez but the Rampage were not to be denied and came back again with 10:38 left in the second to give Rockford's Matthew Stewart, #11, the first goal of his Hat Trick for the evening. The assist on Stewart's Hat Trick bound score came from Rockford's #17, Jamar Beasley. But with only :06 left on the clock, La RaZa scored it's third goal of the evening by #7, Mark Ughy, on a pass from Monterrey's #3, Genoni Martinez to end the quarter and the half up 6-4.

In the third quarter Monterrey continued to push ahead with Alvarez scoring again at the 7:53 mark, but this time Rockford did not answer back and the period ended with La RaZa leading the Rampage 8-4. Point totals changed quickly when La RaZa goalkeeper, Jose Bontii,was assessed a two minute penalty for pushing. Taking advantage of the power play with only 13 seconds remaining until it's expiration, Matt Stewart netted his second goal of the evening on an assist from teammate, #21 Dino Delevski.

The Rampage continued their assault scoring yet another goal in the fourth quarter with just 3:38 remaining in the game. Radoncic tallied his second goal for the night on an assist from Captain "Novi" Marojevic. Coach Jeff Kraft pulled his keeper in lieu of the 6th attacker, Captain Marojevic, with 1:36 left on the clock. Matt Stewart delivered again in the last 2.5 seconds of the match sending the game into sudden death overtime while recording his THIRD goal of the night.

The game winner came with 14:41 left of the OT on an unassisted La RaZa goal by #8, Viktor Quiroz for a 12-10 final. The Rampage hosts La RaZa this Sunday, the 30th at 5:05.
