Rally Falls Short but Bulls Get Closer to Division Crown

DURHAM, NC-The Bulls mustered only one run through the first eight innings Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and found their five-run ninth would not be enough to escape a 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Indians. Durham's magic number over Norfolk to clinch the International League South Division fell to two with the Tides' 2-1 loss in 10 innings at Charlotte.

Indianapolis began their onslaught with a three-run third inning, adding two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and four crucial runs in the ninth. The Bulls, meanwhile, manufactured a run in the sixth, culminating with Chris Richard singling home Fernando Perez.

Josh Johnson led off the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit home run. Then, the Bulls loaded the bases with one out on a Chris Nowak single, an Elliot Johnson double and a Ronnie Merrill walk. Perez walked to force home a run. Jonny Gomes singled to score a run and Dan Johnson singled to drive home two. But Josh Johnson ended the game with a groundout to second base.

Mitch Talbot (13-8, 3.81) took the loss in 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. Ross Ohlendorf (4-4, 3.52) got the win for Indianapolis, holding the Bulls to a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six batters.

Durham's magic number over Charlotte remained at one.

The Bulls host the Indians for the third game of their four-game series Monday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m. Jeff Niemann (8-5, 3.54) will start for Durham and he will be opposed by Indianapolis's Jimmy Barthmaier (3-1, 3.42).
