Rainmen Come from Behind and Beat Detroit

Halifax, NS- Tony Bennett had 21 and Halifax was able to overcome an 18 point, 11 assist nine rebound performance by Randy Gill as the Rainmen defeated Detroit 100-89.

Halifax jumped out quick going on an 11-2 run to start the contest, but Detroit would chip away at the lead going on a 5-0 run of their own to cut it to five. The lead would change hands three times over the next five minutes and at the end of one Detroit lead 24-19.

The Rainmen tried to keep it close in the second quarter, but the Panthers would extend the lead to as many as eight and it would be an eight point lead for Detroit after two.

In the third, the Rainmen came back. Detroit had the lead up to as many as nine, but then the comeback started when following a three by Randy Gill, on the next possession, Walter Waters got nailed with a technical for taunting. Tony Bennett hit one of the two free throws, but the momentum shifted. Glen Dandridge had a nice layin on the left side and Eric Crookshank jammed the first of a pair of slams during the 13-1 run that saw Halifax take a one point advantage. Halifax would stretch the lead to three at 68-65 and that is where we were after three quarters.

In the fourth, it was all Halifax. Brian Silverhorn hit five straight points to extend the lead to 89-83, and the Rainmen went on a late 9-0 run on a Jimmy Twyman layup and a pair of free throws by Brian Silverhorn. The free throws came after Randy Gill was hit with a technical for taunting. Throw in a highlight reel, alley oop, two man jam and the Rainmen had a 100-89 victory.

Notes: Gill and Bennett had to be separated with 1.9 seconds to go in the game after a jawing match. Neither player was assessed a technical. Chuck Bailey had 13 rebounds for the Panthers. Eric Crookshank had 12 boards for Halifax.
