Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers fell to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 2-0 in their 2010 season opener at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.

The Rainiers struggled to find any kind of offensive groove in the outing, as Colorado Springs collectively allowed just four hits with 11 strikeouts to begin the year. The Sky Sox did not allow anyone from the Tacoma lineup to reach third base until reliever Juan Rincon gave up three walks to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth.

Right-hander David Pauley got the Opening Day nod for Tacoma in the loss after allowing a pair of runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Andy Baldwin delivered three innings of relief work and allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts, while right-hander Levale Speigner put together a perfect inning the ninth to round out the Rainiers staff.

Colorado Springs starter Jhoulys Chacin set the tone for the evening early. The right-hander stifled the Rainiers lineup to just one hit through the first five innings of action to earn the win, along with recording a walk and six strikeouts. Rincon escaped giving up the three walks in the bottom of the ninth to collect the save.

Tommy Everidge was the only Tacoma bat to put together a multi-hit outing. The first-year Rainier went 2-for-3 with a pair singles in the second and seventh innings in his debut. Shortstop Chris Woodward's two-out double to left in the eighth was the team's only extra-base hit.

The Rainiers take the field again on Friday at 7:00 P.M. with left-hander Luke French facing-off against Sky Sox right-hander Samuel Deduno, followed by Friday Night Fireworks after the conclusion of the game.
