
Round Rock Express blanked at New Orleans

METAIRIE, La. - For the second consecutive night, the Round Rock Express out-hit the New Orleans Zephyrs but came up short in the run column. Jason Lane's second-inning solo home and Logan Morrison's fifth-inning RBI single pushed the Zephyrs past the Express 2-0 in Friday-night action at Zephyr Field.
Round Rock (0-2) out-hit New Orleans (2-0) 7-5 on the night, but the Express stranded seven runners and missed out on a few solid scoring opportunities. The Express were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
New Orleans starter Rick VandenHurk (1-0) earned the victory with 6.0 scoreless innings on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Taylor Tankersley, Brett Sinkbeil and Scott Strickland each worked a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game. Strickland allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, but was aided by a fly-ball double play to record his first save of the season.
Gustavo Chacin (0-1) took the loss for the Express; he started and allowed one run on three hits and a walk with no strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Polin Trinidad worked the next 4.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Casey Daigle closed the game on the mound for the Express with a perfect eighth inning.
Jason Bourgeois and Drew Meyer each doubled to open the first and third innings, respectively, for the Express, but both were stranded at third. Yordany Ramirez opened the eighth with a pinch-hit single, but he, too, was stranded at third.
Lane's second-inning home run snapped a scoreless tie. It was the second consecutive night in which the Zephyrs snapped a scoreless tie with a solo home run. In the fifth, Bryan Petersen singled with to outs and moved to second on Donnie Murphy's walk. A wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet, and Morrison followed with an with a run-scoring single to shallow right.
Bourgeois had the game's only multiple-hit outing, going 2-for-4.
Round Rock and New Orleans continue their three-game series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT at Zephyr Field. It will be dueling southpaws as the Express send Andy Van Hekken (0-0, 0.00) to the mound opposite Zephyr Andrew Miller (0-0, 0.00).
