Rain Postpones Salem Sox Opener

April 8, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA - We've waited all winter long. What's one more day'

The rain arrived at an inconvenient time on Friday night at LewisGale Field, forcing the Salem Red Sox and the Frederick Keys to postpone the 2011 season opener until Saturday. The two teams will commence the Carolina League schedule with perhaps the most exciting doubleheader in the history of Salem Memorial Ballpark.

Gates will open at 4 PM and the action will start at 5 PM, as lefthander Drake Britton gets the Opening Day honor for the Salem Sox opposite Ryan O'Shea for Frederick. In game two, Salem will start Pete Ruiz against Keys' righty Oliver Drake.

The byproduct of Friday's unfortunate weather is that Saturday's fans will get to experience a once-in-a-lifetime double promotion, with Friday's postgame fireworks and magnet-schedule giveaway joining forces with Saturday's powder-blue tuxedo t-shirt extravaganza. The first 1,000 fans will receive limited edition, light-blue, replica tuxedo-jersey t-shirts. The players will don their finest formal wear as well, sporting black tuxedo jerseys on the diamond.

After finishing with the second-best record in the Carolina League in 2010, the Salem Sox have hopes of bettering that in the coming months. Fans can listen to all of the action with "Voice of the Red Sox" Evan Lepler on Flagship Station NewsTalk960 WFIR and online at www.salemsox.com.
