Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club of the Northern League will conduct a try-out camp at Travis Credit Union Park in Vacaville, California Saturday, March 3rd and Sunday, March 4th in conjunction with the Solano Mudcats.

Registration is set for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd. The try-out will consist of batting practice, defense, throwing, and a timed 60 yard dash. Pitchers will throw in the bullpen. Following a cut, remaining players will play a live game.

Players should bring their own equipment including wood bats, gloves, and shoes. Any player over the age of 18 is welcome to attend with the exception of players currently playing college baseball or under contract to another professional team.

The Northern League is the oldest and most accomplished independent professional baseball league in the country. Over the last 14 years, approximately 600 Northern League players have been sold to Major League organizations, including slugging outfielder J.D. Drew, former Red Sox World Series star Kevin Millar, and pitcher Jeff Zimmerman, who played in the 1999 Major League All-Star Game only two years after pitching in the Northern League. The league plays a 96 game schedule from May 17-September 2.

The Gary SouthShore RailCats are one of eight Northern League clubs and have reached the N.L. Championship Series in each of the last two seasons, winning the league title in 2005. In their five seasons of existence, the RailCats have sold the contracts of 15 players to Major League organizations and have seen one player play in the Major Leagues after playing for the RailCats (Tim Byrdak, Baltimore Orioles).

The RailCats play at beautiful U. S. Steel Yard, a state-of-the-art $45 million facility that opened in 2003. Over 163,000 fans attended RailCats home games in 2006.

The RailCats will also hold a try-out camp at U. S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana in early May. In 2006, former Purdue University standout Mike Coles attended the May try-out and made the RailCats club, spending the entire season with the RailCats.
