Railcats Take Game One

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (18-21) scored four runs over the 4th and 5th innings to erase a 1-0 JackHammers lead and win 5-2 before 4,363 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Friday night in the opener of the three-game series between the two clubs.

The JackHammers (15-24) took an early 1-0 lead in the 4th inning. C Phil Avlas (2-3) led off the inning with a single and stole his 5th base of the season. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) grounded out to Gary SS Jay Pecci, moving Avlas to third base.

DH Tydus Meadows (1-4) hit an RBI groundout to score Avlas for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

The RailCats scored two runs in the 4th inning against Joliet RHP Jason Richardson (1-5). DH Steve Haake (1-3) grounded out. CF Jordan Czarniecki (2-3) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a past ball. RF Christian Guerrero (1-4) hit a two-run home run over the right field wall for a 2-1 Gary lead.

In the 5th inning, Gary increased its lead to 4-1. 1B Jeff Beachum (0-3) led off the inning with a walk and went to second base on a single by LF Mike Massaro (1-3). After 2B Eric McNamee (0-2) struck out, SS Jay Pecci (1-4) hit an RBI single.

Haake walked and Czarniecki hit an RBI single to score Pecci to give the RailCats a three-run lead.

The JackHammers came within two runs of the lead with a run in the 8th inning. SS Kevin Rios (0-4) led off the inning with a fly out to right field. Avlas walked and went to second base on a wild pitch. Thon grounded out to move Avlas to third base and Meadows (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Avlas to bring the JackHammers within two runs at 4-2.

Meadows drove in both of the JackHammers runs on Friday.

Richardson lasted five innings and allowed four runs on four hits. LHP Devin Anderson tossed two scoreless innings and RHP Joe Panozzo made his JackHammers debut in the 8th inning, allowing one run on two hits.

The JackHammers and RailCats will continue their series with a Saturday evening game at 6:00 p.m. For the JackHammers, RHP Jason Novak (1-1, 6.05) takes to the mound against Gary LHP Tony Cogan (2-5, 5.57).
