Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- In a match-up of two all-star starting pitchers, the Gary South Shore RailCats fell 5-3 to the Lincoln Saltdogs on Sunday night.
Lincoln got off to a quick start against Cats' starter Dustin Crenshaw. Matt Forgatch led the game off with a base hit and Luis Nunez followed with a double. Forgatch scored on a Jon Gaston groundout, putting the Saltdogs ahead 1-0.
In the top of the fifth, Tyler Smith and Nunez both singled before Gaston unloaded with a three-run homer to put Lincoln ahead 4-0. The Cats got one of those runs back as Ryan Brockett earned a two out walk and Drew Muren doubled him home to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Cats were finally able to put something together against Saltdogs' starter Marquis Fleming. Wally Backman led off with a base hit and stole second base before Brockett drew a one out walk. Muren drove home Backman with a single to center, cutting the deficit to 4-2. A wild pitch from Fleming allowed Brockett and Muren to advance to second and third but the Cats failed to do anymore damage as Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez both grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Josh Romanski led off with a double down the first base line. He moved to third base with two outs after Craig Maddox bounced out to second base. Backman hit a groundball to second base that Luis Nunez misplayed and Backman hustled down the line to beat it out, scoring Romanski to make it 4-3. Lincoln got an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Ian Gac drove in Forgatch with a base hit, extending the lead to 5-3.
Drew Muren singled with one out in the ninth inning but that was all the Cats got against Marshall Schuler as he tallied his 24th save. Marquis Fleming earned the win, striking out seven in 6.2 innings while allowing five hits and two runs.
The RailCats and Saltdogs will continue the series on Monday night with a 7:10 start. Dan Vaughan will have the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com/live.
