LAST TIME OUT: The Rail Yard Dawgs led 2-0 in the second and 3-2 with less than seven minutes to play in the third but allowed a late goal and ultimately fell to the Birmingham Bulls in overtime on Friday night, 4-3. Jeff Jones scored twice and Steve Mele had two assists in the loss.
IN EXTRA TIME: Friday's game was the fourth time this season the Dawgs have required overtime to decide a result and the first time they fell in the extra session. Roanoke had been 3-0 in OT, 2-0 in games that were decided during the 3-on-3 portion and 1-0 in shootouts prior to Friday. The Dawgs were the last team in the SPHL to record an overtime loss.
A MELE MILESTONE: Steve Mele's two assists on Friday night pushed his all-time point total as a Rail Yard Dawg to 100. In 116 games in a Roanoke sweater, Mele has 35 goals and 65 assists. His two assists on Friday also snapped a six-game pointless drought for Mele who is tied for fourth on the team with 20 points (5 G, 15 A).
ROSTER CHANGES: The Rail Yard Dawgs signed forwards Cal Miska and Everett Thompson, placed forward Eric Witzel on injured reserve and waived forward Roberts Locans this week. Miska opened the year with the Dawgs and played three games before being released and joining the FHL's Elmira Enforcers. He had six goals and 11 assists in 21 games for Elmira. Thompson had been in the FHL with the Carolina Thunderbirds and had nine goals and seven assists. He was also 7th in the FHL with 75 penalty minutes at the time of signing.
JONES LIGHTS THE LAMP: Jeff Jones scored twice on Friday night, his first two-goal game of the season. The winger is tied for fourth on the team with 20 points and is third on the Dawgs with 11 goals.
SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT: The Rail Yard Dawgs have been a much better team in the latter half of a weekend set of games this season. Roanoke is just 5-9-1 on Friday nights but is 9-3-0 on Saturdays. The Dawgs have won six of their last seven Saturday night games.
STEADY AS HE GOES: Jordan Carvalho scored in Friday's overtime loss, pushing his team-leading point total to 27. In 32 games he has surpassed the 25 points (6 G, 19 A) he put up in 50 games between the Peoria Rivermen and Mississippi RiverKings last season. Carvalho now has seven goals on the season and has recorded points in each of his past four games.
UP NEXT: The Dawgs return to Roanoke to begin a three-weekend home stand with a pair of games against the Evansville Thunderbolts. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center.
