Akron Racers News Release
Akron, OHâ The Akron Racers won the series, but were unable to take the series finale as they fell to the New England Riptide 5-1 on Thursday night at Firestone Stadium. NPF All-Star center fielder Iyhia McMichael hit her third home run in the effort.
The Racers worked out of a jam in the second inning when the Riptide loaded the bases with no one out. Starter Nikki Myers forced Riptide second baseman Nicole Thompson to ground into a one-two-three double play, leaving runners at second and third with two outs. The clutch twin killing was named the Summa Health Care System Play of the Game. Akron did not escape the inning unscathed, as New England third baseman Rachael McGinnis took Myers deep to left field, putting the Riptide up 3-0. New England extended their lead again in the third on two unearned runs to build a 5-0 advantage.
Akron looked to rally in the fourth inning when McMichael blasted a solo home run deep over the left field wall to get the Racers on the board. McMichael went one-for-two with an RBI, a run scored and a walk to be named the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game. McMichael leads the Racers with three home runs on the year and continues to lead the league with a .391 batting average.
In the pitcher's circle, Nikki Myers took the loss for the Racers, but went two-for-three at the plate. Radara McHugh worked 4.2 innings of relief, allowing only two hits and no runs.
The Racers are next in action as they host the Texas Thunder in a crucial six-game series at Firestone Stadium. The Racers and Thunder will play doubleheaders on Saturday, July 31 and Sunday at, August 1, with games at 1:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. each day.
