Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Racers used a combination of speed, power and pitching to defeat the Chicago Bandits for the second straight night Thursday. Unlike last night, the Racers (17-10) didn't need extra innings in a pitchers' duel as the Akron bats showed up to Firestone Stadium ready to hit, leading to a comfortable 7-1 victory.
Angela Tincher took the circle for the Racers and kept Chicago (20-6) to only one run, just like teammate Lisa Norris had done on Wednesday night. Tincher threw her seventh complete game of the season, a total that ties her with USSSA Pride pitcher Sarah Pauly for most in the NPF. Unlike last night, Tincher had plenty of offense to fall back on if she needed it, but the Racer ace never did.
The Racers put together back to back three run innings in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to provide more than enough support for their pitcher. Jackie Pasquerella started the outburst with one out in the bottom of the third with a bunt single down the first base line. Two batters later Jamee Juarez drove a single to left field that scored Pasquerella. On the play, Juarez reached second when Bandit left fielder Nicole Trimboli attempted to throw Crystl Bustos out at third. The throw was too late and Juarez and Bustos occupied second and third respectively with one out. Jenny Topping followed Juarez with a two run double that chased Chicago's starter Kristina Thorson from the game and gave Akron a 4-1 lead.
Akron wasn't content with the three run lead and went to work on reliever Gina Oaks in the bottom of the fourth as Kenora Posey led off with a ground ball single into centerfield. Pasquerella then delivered a big one out hit for the second straight inning as she laced an RBI double to left center field that scored Posey. Not to be out done, Racer slugger Crystl Bustos lined a triple down the right field line that scored Pasquerella. During the next at-bat Bustos came home on a passed ball by Chicago's Rachel Folden. That would cap the scoring for the game as the Racers took a 7-1 lead.
Chicago did attempt to mount one scoring threat in the top of the sixth inning as Folden singled center field and Tammy Williams doubled to right field to put Bandits on second and third with one out. Tincher settled in and took care of business from there as she struck out Trimboli and got Kristie Fox to weakly ground out to first baseman Samantha Ricketts to end the inning.
Tincher (6-2) picked up the win going all seven innings and allowing one run on seven hits, one walk and one hit batter as she struck out eight Bandits along the way.
Thorson (6-4) picked up the loss for Chicago as she allowed four runs on four hits in 2.2 innings with one strike out. Oaks added 3.1 innings of work giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks. She did settle in after the first inning allowing only that one walk and facing only six batters in the final two innings.
The Racers and Bandits will be in action again Friday night at 7:05 PM with game three of the five game set. For ticket information contact the Racers ticket office at 330-376-8188 or order your tickets online at www.akronracers.org.
