Real Monarchs News Release
REAL MONARCHS SLC 1-2 SAN ANTONIO FC
RIO TINTO STADIUM; September 2, 2017
Real Monarchs Head Coach Mark Briggs
Thoughts on breakdowns in the last five minutes:
"I don't think it was the last five minutes to be honest with you. I think it was the whole 90 minutes. We didn't turn up, we didn't play. It is as simple as that. We got exactly what we deserved at the end of the game. We didn't do anything that we worked on all week. We are hitting long goal kicks, nobody wants the ball. Just one of those nights. Credit to San Antonio, they were better than us, they wanted it more than us."
On San Antonio doing anything unexpected:
"Not really, no. They stepped four high when they put pressure on us. We just have to be, if move the ball at the speed that we know we can, and people want the ball, and don't hide. Then they didn't really do anything that should have took us out of our rhythm. We just, for whatever reason, we just happened to end up off tonight."
On the importance of set-pieces:
"They are huge. I think you have seen that we have scored a lot off set pieces. It is frustrating tonight because the set pieces, the goals we conceded with defending on our six-yard box, when the ball is over 60 yards away from us. Now, that is unacceptable, that is basics. That is what has been discussed in the locker room. I don't mind losing the game, but it is disappointing to lose a game on basics and not being tuned in."
On making the playoffs with tonight's OKC loss:
"It is great that we have reached the playoffs. Credit to the team, credit to the organization for making it to the playoffs for the first time, but I can't really be too pleased with making it into the playoffs after that performance tonight."
On four of the next five games being on the road:
"We luckily have been great away up until this point. We have given ourselves a little cushion, but now we go to Portland away, which is not going to be an easy game. They are at the bottom, but going there, they will put out a strong team and they are dangerous. We have to make sure we turn up and make sure we are focused and ready to perform at the level the team is capable of."
On Calvo's appearance:
"It was nice to be able to get him on the field, get him some minutes. It is great for Diego and now he, hopefully he can keep going and help improve the squad."
San Antonio FC
Head Coach Darren Powell
On getting the win:
"I think you saw two good teams tonight going at it from the first minute to the last minute. I thought it was an entertaining game of soccer. We were fortunate in the end to come out with two late goals. I'm just extremely proud of the way our players fought for everything tonight. Showed good character and played to the final whistle."
On the physicality of the game:
"When you get two teams in the positions that we are in the league you're going to get a very competitive game. I thought the referee did a very good job. That's what you expect. When you have two good teams, both wanting to play to win, playing with a lot of heart, with a lot of desire, sometimes things are going to be slightly mistimed and that leads to a couple of yellow cards."
On chasing the top spot ahead of the playoffs:
"We're just looking to make sure that each game we prepare ourselves correctly and we take one game at a time. When we get ahead of ourselves. Monarchs are in a tremendous position in the league. Our job is to just to make sure they keep looking over their shoulder. We've got group of players in there that will work hard every week just to try and make sure to set themselves up to win each game."
Forward Mike Seth
On tonight's game:
"It was a great comeback. It just shows the good group of men that we have here. To fight back, especially on the road against first place. That's what we need going into the final stretch of the season."
On what the win means:
"Obviously it's three points. We have a tough road down the stretch. We just have to keep the momentum rolling-keep it business every day that we come to work."
On his goal:
"It was a read. Played a great ball in. The goalie kind of stayed on his line so I tried to get a little flick on it. When you get into spots like that, sometimes you get things to go your way. We were fortunate tonight that we got two of those."
