Clearwater Threshers News Release
DAYTONA, Fla. - Roman Quinn led off with a bang with his career-best sixth home run and the Clearwater Threshers used a big fifth to drop the Daytona Cubs for a second game in a row with a 7-3 victory on Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Art Charles added on to his team lead in long balls with his 16th coming in the second to stretch the Threshers lead to 2-0, but Daytona would scratch across two in the bottom half to even things up.
Clearwater (27-32) used a five-run fifth to bounce back on top and never looked back.
After four straight walks to start the inning to Charles, Harold Martinez, Gabriel Lino, and Chris Serritella put the Threshers ahead, Quinn cleared the bases with a double to center for some insurance.
Quinn would later advance to third on a sac bunt by Jesmuel Valentin and score on a wild pitch to J.P. Crawford.
The Threshers' lead-off man finished the day 3-for-5 with a homer, double, four RBIs, and two runs scored.
Mark Leiter (3-4) held the Cubs at bay in the bottom of the fifth, allowing one run on a walk and two hits, but he set down Dan Vogelbach on strikes with two runners in scoring position to end the threat.
The right-handed hurler had a much better performance than his last time against Daytona (32-25). In that August 7 start, Leiter allowed six runs on five hits and two walks while lasting just 1.2 innings.
Things went much more smooth for Leiter on Wednesday night as he let up just the three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
Perci Garner worked the final two frames and allowed two hits and a walk to go along with two strikeouts, but the Cubs were unable to do any damage off the reliever.
The final game of the four-game set will take place Thursday night for a 7:05 p.m. contest. With a win, the Threshers can move to within five games of first place with 10 left to play.
