River City Rascals News Release
Marion, IL--The River City Rascals were fresh off a complete game win from rookie Albert Ayala. The Rascals turned to veteran Steve Brook on Thursday night when they made their first trip to Southern Illinois.
Brook was challenged by pitching coach Randy Woodard before the ballgame to pick up where Ayala left off. Unfortunately, Brook was not up to the task as he let up two second inning runs.
Chris Hall led off with a double and then scored on a Willie Keane single to make it 1-0. Keane then came around on the second double of the inning by Scott Simon.
The Miners scored again in the third off Brook when Miner hit machine Ralph Santana doubled to lead off. Santana was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored one a 6-4-3 double play.
The game would stay 3-0 until the top of the fifth when the Rascals finally got on the board with a RBI fielder's choice from Ryan Czyz scoring Angel Colon.
The Miners answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Rob Wirth doubled and then scored on an RBI single from Hall. That would be the end of the road for Brook as the Rascals went to Jonathon Miller. A second run would score later in the fifth when a wild pitch from Miller brought in Kevin Koski.
The Rascals, trailing 5-1, didn't quit, as in the sixth, Andy Bettis hit his second home run of the season to bring the Rascals within three at 5-2.
But the night would belong to the rain and to the Miners. A 30 minute rain delay put the game on hold in the middle of the sixth, but when it stopped, the Miners would add two more runs in support of starter Jon Qualls.
Qualls came one out away from the complete game when he was removed in the top of the ninth after giving up his third double to Colon and third run two batters later on the second RBI from Czyz.
With the game at 7-3, Travis Hope was brought it and Hope closed the door getting Brad Hough to ground out.
The win was picked up by Qualls (2-0) and Brook (4-3) suffered the loss.
The Miners are now 4-1 against the Rascals this season and improved to 20-15 on the season. The Rascals dropped to 12-23.
Both the Miners and Rascals are in action tomorrow night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Missouri. First pitch tomorrow night is at 7:05 pm.
**Puppy Chow** Tomorrow night is P.J. night at the ballpark. Fans are invited to wear the P.J.'s and bring their pillows as they will also be entertained after the ballgame with fireworks presented by Progress West Health Care.
