Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Visalia, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes got a big pitching performance from Josh Sborz and finally broke out offensively, as Rancho rolled to a 6-2 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Friday night at Recreation Park.
After losing two in a row to drop their first road-series of the year, the Quakes got back to their winning ways on the road, improving to a Cal League-best 17-7 away from LoanMart Field.
Johan Mieses had three hits and drove in three runs, as Rancho stopped a two-game skid and avoided their first three-game losing streak of the year.
Mieses connected off Rawhide starter Wei-Chieh Huang in the fifth, breaking a scoreless tie with a solo homer, his seventh of the year and second in as many games, giving Rancho a 1-0 lead.
Sborz gave up his lone run of the game with two outs in the fifth. After retiring 13 in a row, Sborz gave up a two-out walk, then allowed consecutive hits, as a double by Oscar Hernandez brought home Dawel Lugo to make it a 1-1 game.
The Quakes took the lead for good in the sixth though, as Matt Beaty singled home Tim Locastro to break the tie and make it 2-1. That chased Huang (1-1) from the game and brought on reliever Gabriel Moya. Moya got the first two hitters he faced, but allowed a two-run double to Mieses to give Rancho some breathing room at 4-1.
That score held until the ninth, as Mieses got going again, doubling to open the inning and then advancing to third on an error by right fielder Stryker Trahan. Joey Curletta followed with his second hit of the night, an RBI single to make it 5-1. Curletta eventually scored on a double-play ball off the bat of Erick Mejia, rounding out the Rancho scoring at 6-1.
Karch Kowalczyk came on and got the first two outs of the ninth, but conceded the final Visalia run of the night, when Hernandez doubled home Henry Castillo to make it 6-2.
Sborz (4-2) earned the win with six innings of one-run, three-hit baseball. Jeff Malm was solid in relief, as he fired two scoreless innings.
The Quakes (31-18) are back in first place all alone, as High Desert (30-19) fell to Lancaster on Friday night. Rancho will look for a second straight road win in Visalia on Saturday, sending Yaisel Sierra (2-2) to the mound, opposite Visalia lefty Josh Taylor (0-4). First pitch on Saturday is 7:00pm.
The Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, June 1st, as they host the Lake Elsinore Storm in the first game of a seven-game home stand. June 1st is another Terra Vista Animal Hospital Bark in the Ballpark, as four-legged friends are welcome at LoanMart Field with the purchase of a $3 Pet Pass. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon...Go Quakes!
