Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - Dean Deetz tossed six-plus strong innings and allowed only an unearned run to lead the Lancaster JetHawks over the High Desert Mavericks in the series opener at The Hangar on Friday night, 2-1.

Deetz (3-1) became the first JetHawk to pitch into the seventh inning this season, but was pulled after the leadoff batter reached on an error and a single followed. The right-hander tied a season-high with five strikeouts and induced two inning- ending double play grounders. He surrendered four hits on the night. In 20.2 innings against the Mavericks (30-19) this season, Deetz has given up just five earned runs.

The JetHawks scored their only two runs in the first inning. Bobby Boyd, who drove in nine runs in Thursday 's 29-11 victory over Stockton, opened the frame with a double and then stole third base. It was his league leading 21st stolen base of the season. Johnny Sewald followed with an RBI single, his first run batted in as a JetHawk. Sewald would later score himself on a passed ball.

It remained 2-0 until the seventh. Scott Heineman reached on an error by Lancaster third baseman Luis Reynoso and Luke Tendler followed with a walk, forcing Deetz from the game. Andrew Thome came on for his JetHawks debut out of the bullpen and the right-hander retired the next three in order. A wild pitch and a passed ball, however, allowed a run to score for High Desert. Thome struck out Tripp Martin to end the frame and strand the tying run on third.

The Mavericks threatened in the eighth against Thome as well, but he was able to once again record a strikeout and leave the tying run 90 feet away. Travis Demeritte drew a two-out walk and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a balk. Thome fanned Jose Cardona to end the inning.

Jacob Dorris earned his second save in as many opportunities, but it didn 't come without drama. Heineman was hit by a pitch to open the ninth and Luke Tendler walked on a 3-2 pitch. JetHawks Pitching Coach Mike Burns came out to the mound to chat with Dorris and was thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Adrian Gonzalez. Dorris proceeded to retire the next three batters in order on a strikeout and two foul pop outs.

Bryan Muniz went 0-for-3 in the contest and saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end.

The JetHawks and Mavericks continue their four-game series on Saturday night at The Hangar. Josh James (3-2) will start for Lancaster against Ariel Jurado (4-1). First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
