Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - One day after overcoming two deficits for a walk-off win, Rancho Cucamonga couldn't climb out of an early hole on Thursday, falling 7-5 to Lancaster at LoanMart Field.
The JetHawks (9-5, 46-38) struck in the first inning against Quakes' starter John Richy (7-3). Marc Wik blasted his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot off the right-center field scoreboard. A.J. Reed continued the rally, tripling down the right field line. Chase McDonald then doubled to left field, scoring Reed for a 2-0 advantage.
Lancaster took advantage of some defensive miscues in the fifth to expand their lead. Reed led off the inning against Richy with a double to left-center field. After advancing to third on a groundout, Reed came home when Jacob Nottingham's grounder resulted in a throwing error by shortstop Tim Locastro. Ronnie Mitchell singled and Brian Holborton walked, loading the bases. With two outs, James Ramsey hit a pop-up to short, but Locastro dropped the ball as Nottingham and Mitchell scored, making it a 5-0 contest.
The Quakes (7-7, 48-36) broke through against JetHawks' starter Akeem Bostick (1-2) in the sixth inning. Erisbel Arruebarrena drew a one-out walk. Brandon Dixon reached on an infield single, with Arruebarrena advancing to third on an error by the first baseman Reed. One batter later, Arruebarrena raced home as Paul Hoenecke grounded into a fielder's choice, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Rancho Cucamonga drew a bit closer in the seventh. Locastro made amends for his errors by slugging a solo homer down the left field line for his first in a Quakes' uniform, trimming the margin to 5-2.
Bostick fell one out shy of a season-high for innings pitched, lasting six and two-third frames while allowing two runs (one earned), five hits and four walks while striking out four.
Lancaster restored its five-run lead in the top of the eighth against reliever Karch Kowalczyk. Reed, the California League leader in batting average at .344, singled to left field for his third hit of the game. Chase McDonald lifted an opposite-field homer to right for his 13th of the year, giving the JetHawks a 7-2 cushion.
The Quakes refused to go quietly in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Tyler Brunnemann. Dixon singled to left with one out. Hoenecke extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single to right. Webster Rivas singled to left, plating Dixon to make it 7-3.
Rancho Cucamonga had a chance to tie in the bottom of the ninth against JetHawks' right-hander Aaron Greenwood. Jacob Scavuzzo singled and stole second base. Cody Bellinger chased Scavuzzo home with a double to center field, giving Bellinger a team-leading 62 RBIs for the season. Arruebarrena singled up the middle, scoring Bellinger and bringing Dixon to the plate as the potential tying run. Dixon's fly ball to center field was caught by James Ramsay, however, giving Lancaster its second win of the series.
The Quakes, who own the best home record in the California League at 28-14 this season, are 6-9 in their last 15 games at LoanMart Field.
Rancho Cucamonga will try to earn a split in the four-game set against Lancaster on Friday night. The Quakes will send right-hander Jeff Brigham (4-4, 5.02 ERA) to the mound, while the JetHawks counter with left-hander Bryan Radziewski (1-2, 3.64 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
