Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Blaze lost for the third straight game and could only muster 3 hits in the 3-0 loss to San Jose. After dropping a 14-inning contest that stretched late the previous night, Blaze bats couldn't wake up against San Jose starter Martin Agosta (3-6), as the Giants righty pitched 8 strong with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. The 8 shutout innings were a season high for Agosta and secured a series victory for San Jose, its first since late May.

Manager Eddie Menchaca tabbed LHP Will Mathis (1-2) for the spot-start because RHP Dylan Unsworth was promoted before the game to AA Jackson. Mathis' first three innings were scoreless, but the southpaw ran into trouble in the 4th. Christian Arroyo led off with a single, and Ryder Jones followed up with a double (22). Angel Villalona was next and promptly singled into centerfield to plate both Arroyo and Jones, and it was 2-0 San Jose. All told Mathis went 3.2 IP and gave up 5 hits and 2 runs with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

RHP Rohn Pierce, who was added to the roster from short-season A ball in Everett, made his Bakersfield Blaze debut in relief. The lone blemish on the night for Pierce was a solo home run he allowed to RF Tyler Horan (7) in the 6th inning, which made it 3-0 San Jose. The other Blaze pitcher to appear tonight was RHP Aaron Brooks. He pitched 2 clean innings out of the bullpen with 1 punch-out.

Blaze hitters failed to reach third base in the contest, as Kyle Petty, Burt Reynolds, and Aaron Barbosa were the only players to collect hits for the Blaze, producing just 3 singles. LHP Christian Jones pitched the ninth for San Jose and recorded his first save of the season.

The Blaze look to salvage a game in the series and avoid the sweep in the Friday finale. It will be RHP Brett Ash (4-5, 3.03) tossing the ball for Bakersfield, against San Jose RHP Jason Forjet (2-2, 3.40). First pitch is scheduled at 7:00 pm from Municipal Stadium.
