San Jose (Wednesday, March 17, 2004) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that President and General Manager Alexi Lalas has been named to the prestigious advisory board of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). In conjunction with the Earthquakes forming a unique partnership with PCA, Lalas joins an esteemed advisory board that includes former San Francisco 49er great Ronnie Lott, Oakland A's Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito, former North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith, Detroit Pistons head coach Larry Brown, former NBA star and senator Bill Bradley, Olympic Gold Medallist Summer Sanders and New York Jets head coach Herm Edwards. Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson serves as PCA's national spokesman.

"It's an honor to be included on the PCA Advisory Board with such a distinguished group of people," Lalas said. "I'm excited about the Earthquakes partnership with PCA because I believe their message is an important one and one that is too often lost in today's youth sports world."

The Positive Coaching Alliance was established at Stanford University in 1998 and is a leader in youth sports education. PCA's "Double Goal Coach" believes that winning is a goal in youth sports, but that there is a second, more important goal of using sports to teach life lessons through positive coaching.

"When individuals the caliber of Alexi Lalas get involved, it is only a matter of time before Positive Coaching becomes the standard for youth coaches in this country," said Jim Thompson, founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance. "His affiliation with PCA enhances our organization and will help get our message out to coaches, parents and youth sports leaders. This will mean more kids sticking with sports longer and having a better experience."

The partnership includes the PCA and Earthquakes honoring selected youth soccer coaches who demonstrate outstanding performance as a "Double Goal Coach". These coaches will be honored during three Earthquakes home games during the 2004 season. In addition, the Quakes-PCA partnership includes PCA coaches participating in the Quakes game observation clinics and appearances from Lalas, assistant coach Tim Hanley and Quakes players at various PCA events. Lalas and Hanley are scheduled to speak at the PCA Annual Youth Sports Awards on Wednesday, March 17 at Stanford University.

PCA provides live, research-based training workshops and practical tools for coaches, parents and leaders who operate youth sports programs to get them on the same page about what it means to Honor the Game. Positive Coaching Alliance educates adults who shape the youth sports experience by offering partnership programs with YSO's, schools, cities and national sports governing bodies. PCA also provides corporations with the opportunity to offer sports parent workshops to their employees.
