Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Inland Empire outfielders Preston Mattingly and Kyle Russell each smacked a three-run homer and starter Ethan Martin fired five scoreless innings, as the 66ers dropped the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, by a score of 9-5 on Saturday night at The Epicenter.
Quakes' starter Will Smith was more impressive than Martin over the first four innings, retiring the first 12 men he faced. Smith walked two of the first three men he faced to open the fifth though, then gave up a three-run blast to Mattingly, as the 66ers took the lead for good at 3-0.
Inland Empire got Smith (0-1) for another run in the sixth, as Russell's RBI single brought home Cesar Suarez to make it 4-0.
The Quakes built some momentum in the bottom of the inning, getting to 66ers' reliever Miguel Sanfler for a pair of runs. Roberto Lopez knocked in Tyson Auer with an RBI double, making it 4-1. Lopez later scored on an RBI ground out by Dillon Baird, as the deficit was cut to two at 4-2.
That was as close as the Quakes would get though, as reliever Jeremy Haynes was roughed up for five runs in the seventh. With two outs and a runner at first, Suarez tripled to bring home Matt Wallach, making it 5-2. Johan Garcia followed with an RBI double, giving the 66ers a 6-2 advantage. Alfredo Silverio followed with what should have been the final out of the inning, a ground ball back to the mound. Haynes' throw to first was array though, extending the inning and allowing Kyle Russell to drop a three-run homer to left field. Russell's second homer of the year capped the Inland Empire scoring at 9-2.
The Quakes rallied for three runs in the eighth, as Jacobo picked up a two-run single and Rian Kiniry had a sac fly, making it a 9-5 game. Kyle Smit came out of the bullpen to retire five of the final six hitters he faced though, helping preserve the win for the 66ers.
Martin (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, while striking out nine in the win.
The Quakes (1-2) send Matt Shoemaker to the mound on Sunday at 2:05pm, as he makes his California League debut. Geison Aguasviva will counter for Inland Empire.
