LAST GAME vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
Quad City Steamwheelers at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers
April 10, 2005
Wachovia Arena at Carey Place
Pioneers 64, Steamwheelers 28

Wilkes-Barre, Penn. — The Quad City Steamwheelers sixth season of af2 got off to an acrimonious start with a 64-28 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Pioneers in front of 4,532 fans at the Wachovia Arena at Carey Place. The 36-point loss for the Steamwheelers is the biggest defeat in franchise history, supplanting an 81-56 loss to Peoria in 2002 and marks the first time in team history that a new head coach did not win his first game in charge.
Travis Burns had a team-high 97 yards receiving on 10 catches, as well as 97 return yards while Matt Pike threw a pair of scores, but it was not enough as the Pioneers scored 43 unanswered points, including 36 in the second half, to improve to 2-0 on the season. With the loss, the Steamwheelers start the season 0-1 for just the second time in team history.
The first quarter was dominated by the two teams' offenses and was tied 21-21 at the end of the first 15 minutes. Torey Morris scored the Steamwheelers' first touchdown of the season when he caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Pike on the second play from scrimmage, giving Quad City a 7-0 lead. Burns added a pair of scores later in the quarter, a 57-yard kickoff return and a 14-yard reception from Pike, but the Pioneers were able to answer each score with a touchdown of their own, to keep the game level after the first quarter.
Burns, who was making his Steamwheeler debut, added his third score of the game with 6:44 left in the second quarter when he pulled in a seven-yard toss from fellow newcomer Sam Clemons, putting Quad City ahead 28-21.
However, that would be the final time that the Steamwheelers would lead and the last time that they would score.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton quarterback Kyle Rowley threw his fourth touchdown of the game with one second left in the opening half to make the score 28-28 as the teams went into the locker room.
The Pioneers late score set the tone for the second half as Rowley threw two more touchdown passes while also running one in himself to give his team a lead from which they would not look back. Wiles-Barre/Scranton rounded out its second half blitz by with scores from Taso Apostolidis on a short run, Demetrius Austrum on a fumble recovery and a 22-yard field goal by David Davis to give the Pioneers the 64-28 win.
Win the victory, the Pioneers became the first team in af2 history to defeat the Steamwheelers in three consecutive meetings after sweeping the season series in 2004. The Pioneer defense also made history by shutting out the Steamwheelers in the second half, joining the 2000 Arkansas Twisters as the only teams ever to shutout the Steamwheelers over an entire half.

LAST GAME RESET
Quad City Steamwheelers at Amarillo Dusters
May 7, 2005
Toyota Field at the Amarillo Civic Center
Dusters 58, Steamwheelers 48

AMARILLO, Texas. — The Quad City Steamwheelers saw their three-game winning streak was snapped in exasperating fashion on Saturday night with a 58-48 loss to the Amarillo Dusters at the Amarillo Civic Center. For the second straight week, the game was tied in the final minute, but this time the ‘Wheelers would not have luck on their side.
Amarillo quarterback Julian Reese, who entered the game with an af2-best 12 rushing touchdowns, added three rushing scores to that total and threw for three more to pace the Dusters who improved to 4-1 with the win. But despite Reese's play, it was Jeremy Hershey's 29-yard field goal with eight seconds left that provided the difference between the two teams.
Nick Gatto, whose last-second field goal won the game for Quad City a week ago, had a chance to send the game to overtime, but his 45-yard attempt on the game's final play was wide, giving the Dusters the victory. With the result no longer in question, Kendrick Walker took the ball off the net and ran it back for the score to give the game its final scoreline of 58-48.
The loss takes much of the luster off of what had been a great game by quarterback Sam Clemons. The former Western Illinois signal caller passed for 209 yards and five touchdowns, and added his first running score of the season to put the Steamwheelers in a position to win the game. However, on a crucial third down play in the game's final minute, Clemons had a pass batted up into the air by an Amarillo defensive lineman. Clemons caught the deflection and took off running for a first down before being hit from behind. The ball came loose as Clemons hit the turf, but the referees ruled that the Steamwheelers' quarterback was not down before the ball came out, giving the ball to the Dusters, and setting the stage for Hershey's game-winning kick.
That was the second controversial play of the final two minutes, and the second to go against the ‘Wheelers. Quad City was leading 48-41 as the Dusters were driving for the game-tying touchdown. On a first-and-ten from the 14 yard line, Reese tried to rifle a pass to wide receiver Jarrod Rouanzion in the back of the end zone. The pass hit Rouanzoin's hands and bounced up off of the catch net before coming back down. Matt Forbes appeared to intercept the ball before it hit the turf, but the officials ruled that the ball hit the back boards before Forbes had control, thus giving the Dusters another chance to tie the score. Six plays later they would take advantage of that chance as Reese tallied his third score of the night on a fourth and goal run from the two-yard line, leveling the score at 48-48 and setting the stage for the game's wild finish.
Quad City now finds itself alone in third place in the Midwest Division at 3-2, a game behind the Dusters and even further back of the first place Memphis Xplorers (5-1) who defeated Oklahoma City earlier on the night.

MISCALLANEOUS TEAM NOTES

Bad Taste on the Way Out: Redemption is the word being bandied about the Quad City locker room this week as it looks to atone for its season opening loss to the Pioneers on April 10. That day the ‘Wheelers suffered the worst loss in franchise history, falling 64-28 and they were shutout in the second half for just the second time in team history.
With the loss, Quad City has dropped each of its last three meetings with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, making it the only team ever to knock off the two-time ArenaCup champs on three consecutive occasions.

Bad Taste on the Way In: As much as the ‘Wheelers have struggled against the Pioneers, they have had an equally hard time in the game's immediately preceding their matchup with the East Division side. In the Steamwheelers five game's prior to playing the Pioneers, including Saturday's defeat in Amarillo, they have a combined record of 1-4, with one of those losses coming in the 2004 postseason against Louisville. The only time that Quad City notched a victory before taking on Wilkes-Barre came in Week 3 of the 2004 season when the ‘Wheelers defeated Tennessee Valley 47-29 at The MARK before traveling to Pennsylvania and being handed their first loss of the season, a 40-27 defeat at the hands of the Pioneers.

Everything's Not Lost: Despite Saturday's heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Dusters, the ‘Wheelers can take solace in the way that they have responded to defeats in the past. The loss in Amarillo was just the 17th regular season loss in team history, and in the 16 previous games following those defeats, Quad City has an all-time record of 10-6, including, a 1-0 mark this season thanks to the ‘Wheelers 36-29 win over Bossier-Shreveport following the season opening defeat by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The loss to Amarillo was also the seventh in team history to a divisional opponent. Following those games, the ‘Wheelers are just 2-4, including an 0-2 mark a year ago with one of those losses coming at the hands of the Pioneers.

Burn Baby Burns: With the exception of the home opener against Bossier-Shreveport when he missed most of the practice week to witness the birth of his first child, Quad City offensive specialist Travis Burns has clearly been the ‘Wheelers go-to receiver.
He leads the squad in receptions with 35, yards with 336 and is tied with Jack Walker, Jr. for the team lead in touchdown receptions with seven.
Burns has also stood out on kick returns, returning 16 kicks for 312 yards, good for a 19.5 yards per return average. In the season opener against the Pioneers, Burns ran a kick back 56 yards for a touchdown.

Time to Trap Thomas: The primary reason that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has been able to run off three staright wins against the Steamwheelers has been the play of offensive specialist J.R. Thomas. The Indiana University-Pennsylvania product was named Offensive Player of the Game in the second of those three contests, eclipsed 100 yards receiving in two of the three and found the end zone four times, including at least once in all three contests.

TALE OF THE TAPE: The Steamwheelers are ranked 9th in the latest Weekly Coaches poll with 84 points while the Pioneers are directly above them, ranked 8th with 102 points. Here is a complete look at the statistical breakdown of the two teams.
