Quad Cities signs nine more players
September 18, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Quad City Riverhawks News Release
Quad Cities, IL. The ABA Quad Cities team had its most competitive tryout camp thus far in Rockford, IL. With 18 players present, the atmosphere was set for four hours plus of tough play, drills and running. The camp was run by a prominent professional trainer in the Chicago-land area who has trained the likes of Scottie Pippen and Antonio Davis. This allowed team owner Tom McGinn, VP of Basketball Ops/Asst Coach Acie Earl and team consultant Dorian Earl to watch and evaluate every player in the gym.
This tryout camp was dominated by athletic forwards such as Randy Wright. Wright is an athletic 6-3 small forward or big guard from Lewis University. He was often on the wings for fast break finishes. Steve Harris, a 6-4 small forward was another local Quad City streetball-rec league legend. Lebron Massey had maybe the best camp of the day with an NBA name and has NBA ties. The rumor is that the Indiana Pacers organization has ties to the family and has kept tabs on him since he was young. At 6-7, he rebounded and scored at will with a few thunderous dunks.
The guard play was solid with the best guard being Lonnie Randolph, a Chicago HS native - a true point guard. Other guards with great camps included Haze Massey and Tyler Ryan. Murphy Carter, another guard also showed very well. Michael Kunzer also impressed as did big Alvin Robertson a hefty 6-9" ex-Loyola player.
These nine signees now push the Quad Cities vet camp roster to 15 with the previous 6 players announced. In all, there will be 20-25 players at Vet Camp starting on October 27th. The last tryout camp is scheduled for September 23rd, 12-4pm at Marycrest College located at 1540 W. 12rh Street in Davenport, Iowa. Please note that the camp was moved from the Davenport YMCA. Cost is $100 for players that pre-register and walk ins are $150 cash. Any players or agents with questions, please call Acie Earl at 319 621 1540 or email eachoaearl@aol.com . The team is accepting resumes for interns and volunteers to help with game ops, ticketing, appearances and the mascot. Quad Cities opens up at home against Hammond November 9th at Marycrest Activities Center at 705pm. Single and season tickets will go on sale soon. For more information, visit www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
