QB McCoy to Start, WR Pearcy to Debut in Nashville Tomorrow
May 24, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announce that quarterback Chris McCoy, who was the 2010 SIFL Offensive MVP and led the Lions to the SIFL championship in the same year, will be starting at quarterback in place of the injured Antwon Young Sunday in Nashville against the conference-leading Venom. The game will also mark the debut of local product and former AFL wide receiver Cody Pearcy, who will see his first action with the Lions tomorrow in Tennessee.
McCoy will start his first game for the Lions since the last playoff game of the 2011 season, when the Lions were members of the SIFL. He takes the reins at QB after a stellar first half of the season by signal- caller Antwon Young, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury last Saturday night in Huntsville against the Alabama Hammers. Even though he has only played in mopup duty so far this season in a blowout win against the Georgia Fire at home on April 26, McCoy's experience at both the Naval Academy as a college quarterback and in Columbus with the SIFL version of the Lions is invaluable as he prepares for his first start in three years.
One of McCoy's targets will be wide receiver Cody Pearcy, who will see his first game action in a Lions jersey after suffering an injury before the first game of the season. Pearcy played for Glenwood School in Phenix City and then played collegiately at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, where he still holds all-time career records there with 147 catches, 2,632 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns. Perhaps one of the most telling records he still holds at Huntingdon is a 17.9 yards per reception average - keep in mind, a stat that was made in 11-on-11 football on a 100-yard field and only goes to prove his explosiveness with the ball. He was signed by the Atlanta Falcons briefly in 2012 after these eye-popping numbers in his NFL Pro Day workout: a 4.31 second 40-yard dash time, a 44" vertical leap, and a 3.76 second short-shuttle time. If those numbers were translated to the NFL combine, his shuttle time would tie for third-best ever (as of 2012), with his vertical jump sixth-best and his 40-yard time 11th best out of over 4,600 participants in the combine.
McCoy, Pearcy, and the rest of the Lions look to close the one-game gap between them and the Venom heading into tomorrow's game for the American Conference lead. Pending the results of the Georgia- Alabama matchup tonight in Huntsville, the Lions could find themselves in a two or three-way tie for the conference lead with a win tomorrow in Tennessee. Kickoff at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium is slated for 3 PM EDT with an audio broadcast of the game available at http://player.originpull.cdn.liquidcompass.net/WPRTFM.
