Georgia Fire News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Trailing for the entirety, the Georgia Fire (3-4) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) drop their second straight contest losing 39-21 to the Alabama Hammers (3-4) creating an even more bunched up American Conference.
In a lackluster offensive performance, the Fire had their lowest scoring output of the season barely mustering up 21 points with the last touchdown coming in mop-up time in the game's final minute. Georgia dug themselves into a deep pit in large part to 14 penalties on 110 yards as well as having three touchdowns called back due to penalties. The offensive line was no matchup for the Hammers defensive front allowing six sacks leading to the eventual departure of starting QB Cecil Lester who exited the game midway through the 4th quarter due to injury.
Fire offense was unrecognizable all around going 1 of 6 on 3rd down conversions in addition to scoring just one time in five trips to the red-zone. Lester threw two costly interceptions of his own of which one was single-handily hauled in by Hammers DB T.J. Williams who promptly returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Cecil finished the night completed just 12 of 23 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.
Arguably, the Fire defense had their strongest showing of the season. Despite the difference in the score, Alabama's offense struggled almost just as bad as Georgia. One can make an argument that their strong performance was in large part due to Hammers starting QB Russell Hill not being the starting lineup. In his absence Darnell Kennedy picked up his first start in almost two years completing just 10 of 32 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
With the win coupled with possibility of Nashville losing tomorrow, the once dormant defending champion Alabama Hammers could move to within a game of first place setting up a pivotal mid-season matchup against the Venom next Monday night.
For Georgia, Saturday is the end of a long three-game road trip and the beginning of three-game home stand that will start next Sunday with a matinee special pitting the Fire against the Richmond Raiders (2-5) who just picked up their second victory of the season on Saturday in a 55-33 win over Harrisburg. One note, Richmond's all-time record road record in the state of Georgia is 0-7.
