San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 4, 2002) - San Jose quarterback John Dutton, the MVP of ArenaBowl XVI, was released by the World Champion SaberCats on Wednesday.

Dutton, who led the SaberCats to their first-ever ArenaBowl title this past season, now has the opportunity to pursue a starting position with another team in the Arena Football League.

A backup to AFL Offensive Player of the Year Mark Grieb for most of the 2002 season, Dutton took over as the team's starter for the final regular season game and the playoffs after Grieb sustained a fractured collarbone in Arizona on July 12.

Grieb is expected to return as the team's starting quarterback in 2003.

In three postseason games, Dutton completed 69-of-100 pass attempts for 889 yards and 15 touchdowns and was named MVP in all three contests. He established team playoff records for pass completions, attempts, yards and completion percentage.

Dutton earned ArenaBowl XVI honors after completing 20-of-26 passes for 236 yards and 5 touchdowns in San Jose's 52-14 win over Arizona.

The SaberCats open defense of the title in February when the AFL kicks off its 17th season with games televised on NBC.
