QB Colt Brennan Among Players on the Colonials 10-Man Reserve Unsigned List

April 26, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

EAST HARTFORD, CT - April 26, 2011 - The HARTFORD COLONIALS of the United Football League announced the team has secured the UFL rights of quarterback COLT BRENNAN, a 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist and record-setting passer at University of Hawaii.

Brennan is among the players on Hartford's 10-man Reserve Unsigned list that claims the UFL rights to veteran street free agents for the 2011 season. These players join 35 players who saw action for the Colonials in 2010 and placed on the Protected Player list, which was announced April 6.

Teams can increase their rosters to 70, the UFL limit, through the forthcoming league draft and by signing free agents.

Other notable players on Hartford's Reserve Unsigned list include former New England Patriots safety ANTWAIN SPANN and cornerback AHMAD CARROLL, a former first-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers, as well as left tackle ADAM TERRY, who was taken in the second round by the Baltimore Ravens. In all, the list includes three offensive linemen, three safeties, two cornerbacks, one defensive tackle and a quarterback.

"You never have enough big men," said Colonials head coach and general manager JERRY GLANVILLE. "We got three offensive linemen that when they break the huddle, they should block out the sun. We had to get a quarterback. We had to get safeties and you've got to have corners to win. We got a defensive tackle with size who can run. All in all, we tried to fix what was broken."

Brennan set NCAA Division I-A passing records at Hawaii, bringing national attention to the program. He was a two-time All-American Third Team selection as a junior and senior.

In 2006, Brennan broke the single-season records for touchdown passes (58), passing yards (5,549) and passer efficiency (186.0) on his way to winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy, awarded to the nation's top passer. Brennan had another stellar season in 2007, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting behind winner Tim Tebow and runner-up Darren McFadden.

"I had the pleasure of getting a chance of be coached by Coach Glanville when he was the defensive coordinator for the University of Hawaii my first two years there," said Brennan. "It was a great way to have a relationship with a coach because his emphasis was on defense, but I was the guy who had to go against him every day in practice. He and I developed a tremendous relationship. He stepped up and gave me an opportunity here [in the UFL] that I really needed. I can't wait to get wait to get back out on the football field. It's an honor to know I have a chance to play again for Coach Glanville."

In three seasons at Hawaii, Brennan set NCAA career records for completion percentage (70.4) and touchdown passes (131), that latter which was broken by Texas Tech quarterback GRAHAM HARRELL in 2008. Brennan passed for 400 yards in 20 games, another NCAA record, and amassed 14,193 passing yards in his collegiate career.

Glanville was the defensive coordinator at Hawaii under head coach JUNE JONES in 2005-06, Brennan's sophomore and junior seasons. Brennan worked out recently for Glanville in Dallas.

"When you got a guy who puts the ball where it's supposed to be, the receiver doesn't have to make a great catch. The receiver just has to be in his route," Glanville said. "If you saw Colt play, it was like a video game. It wasn't like a football game. It was like a video game where every pass was completed.

"Our team used to holler at me as I was sitting with the defense, ‘Coach, you better get up there! They're playing man-to-man, you'll miss it.' Before you could walk from the bench to the sideline, there would be a touchdown. "We had one game where he had six or eight series that he had the ball for a minute or less and would score. This is not normal."

Brennan, a native of Laguna Beach, CA., was drafted in the sixth round by the Washington Redskins in 2008. After being released in August 2010, he was signed by the Oakland Raiders and cut on Sept. 4.

Carroll, the 25th overall pick in 2004, has played in 57 NFL games between 2004-09 with the Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. He registered 127 tackles, and had three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Carroll also spent time with the Orlando Predators, an arena league team, and last year played for Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

"He's from Atlanta and I talked to him on the phone," said Glanville, the Atlanta Falcons head coach in 1990-93. "He goes, ‘Coach, you probably don't remember this but you signed a t-shirt for me years ago. I ran up to you and asked you to sign my t-shirt. I still got it.' He said, ‘My dad went to every game you ever coached in Atlanta. I can't wait to play the bump-and-run [coverage] like you coached it, like you believe in it."

The UFL begins its third season in August as the Colonials play an eight-game schedule against teams from Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia. The 2011 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans can register for tickets for the 2011 Colonials season at www.HartfordColonials.com.
